Subject: Geothermal Well Renewal
Permit # WI0500181
Summary of Inspection and Sampling on March 14, 2024
Mr. Dyson:
In support of your request for renewal of the above-referenced geothermal well permit, Tyler Clark from
the Division of Water Resources Performed an inspection and collected samples from the well influent
and effluent on March 14, 2024. The permittee, William Dyson, was present during the inspection, and
identified the location of the well. The well is used for geothermal heat exchange and water supply.
During the inspection, the geothermal system was in operation.
The well and exposed well piping was covered with a fiberglass rock and was in good condition, with no
leaks observed. The wellhead appeared to be secure. No well identification plate was observed. The
influent and effluent piping was not labeled, but the inspector labeled them in the field prior to taking
photographs (Attachment 1). Influent (W1-I) and effluent (W1-E) water samples were collected from the
sample ports at the well head. Both sample ports were disinfected with a 70% isopropyl solution prior to
sampling. Samples were collected directly from the sample ports following disinfection. Groundwater
quality (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and salinity) was measured in the field. The
measurements are relatively similar between the well effluent and the system discharge.
Samples were delivered to the Division of Water Resources Laboratory on March 14, 2024. Laboratory
analytical results were returned on February 13, 2024 (Attachment 3). Concentrations of the constituents
analyzed were below the North Carolina Groundwater Standards (NCAC 15A.02L). The concentration of
the constituents analyzed were relatively similar between the influent and effluent samples. The
concentration values for arsenic were slightly over half the North Carolina Groundwater Standards
(NCAC 15A.02L). The 2L limit is 10 mg/L and your well showed 5.6 and 6 mg/L for both the effluent
and influent samples. Arsenic is a naturally occurring element and is well-known to occur in elevated
levels in Orange County.
Neither the field measurements nor the laboratory results suggest a concern regarding groundwater
quality. Based on the inspection of the well head, and the laboratory analytical results for the samples
collected, the continued use of the well for geothermal heat exchange and consumption is appropriate.

NCDEQ-WSS-Chemistry Lab Data Qualifiers
A1 The reported value is an average, where at least one result is qualified with a “U”. The PQL is used for the qualified result(S) to calculate the average.
B1 Coliform-Countable membranes with less than 20 colonies. Reported value is estimated or is a total of the counts on all filters reported per 100 ml.
B2 Coliform-Counts from all filters were zero.
B3 Coliform-Countable membranes with more than 60 or 80 colonies. The value reported is calculated using the count from the smallest volume filtered and reported as a greater than ">" value.
B4 Coliform-Filters have counts of both >60 or 80 and <20. Reported value is estimated or is a total of the counts on all filters reported per 100 ml.
B5 Coliform-Too many colonies were present; too numerous to count (TNTC). TNTC is generally defined as >150 colonies.
B6 Coliform-Estimated Value. Blank contamination evident.
B7 Coliform-Many non-coliform or non-enterococcus colonies or interfering non-coliform or non-enterococcus growth present. In this competitive situation, the reported value may under-represent actual density.
BB1 MPN-No wells or tubes gave a positive reaction. Value based upon the appropriate MPN Index and reported as a less than “<” value.
BB2 MPN-All wells or tubes gave positive reactions. Value based upon the MPN Index and reported as a greater than “>” value.
C Total residual chlorine was present in sample upon receipt in the laboratory; value is estimated.
G1 BOD-The dissolved oxygen (DO) depletion of the dilution water blank exceeded 0.2 mg/L.
G2 BOD-The bacterial seed controls did not meet the requirement of a DO depletion of at least 2.0 mg/L and/or a DO residual of at least 1.0 mg/L.
G3 BOD-No sample dilution met the requirement of a DO depletion of at least 2.0 mg/L and/or a DO residual of at least 1.0 mg/L.
G4 BOD-Evidence of toxicity. This is generally characterized by a significant increase in the BOD value as the sample concentration decreases. The reported value is calculated from the highest dilution representing the maximum loading potential and
G5 BOD-The glucose/ glutamic acid standard exceeded the range of 198 ± 30.5 mg/L.
G7 BOD-Less than 1 mg/L DO remained for all dilutions set. The reported value is an estimated greater than value and is calculated for the dilution using the least amount of sample.
G8 BOD-Oxygen usage is less than 2 mg/L for all dilutions set. The reported value is an estimated less than value and is calculated for the dilution using the most amount of sample.
G9 BOD-The DO depletion of the dilution water blank produced a negative value.
