Vanessa Manuel:
I am writing to you in response to NOD-2024-DV-0046 which included Incident Number:
202400876. SGWASA received the June 10, 2024 NOD-2024-DV-0046 notification letter from
NCDEQ on June 17, 2024. Following is an overview and response by SGWASA to the incident.
Incident No. 202400876 (5/8/2024): 207 Cozart Street , Creedmoor, NC 27522 Self-
Reported SSO at MH 35437 due to Backup Caused by Grease
The sanitary sewer overflow at this location was due to a buildup of grease and other
debris in the main sewer line. The grease, as noted on the initial report was due to utility
customers flushing grease and other objects into the sewer system. SGWASA utility
crews responded quickly to the overflow event and cleaned up the area accordingly.
Following the event, utility crews inspected, cleaned and applied lime to the area
affected. Based on the circumstances causing this overflow event, SGWASA submits
that this discharge was caused by factors beyond the reasonable control of SGWASA and
could not have been prevented by the exercise of reasonable control.
Due to the causes associated to this event, SGWASA utility staff has increased monitoring and
scheduled cleaning of the sewer collection system in the area to mitigate future sewer overflow
events in the immediate area.
Based on the information presented in this letter, I hope it is apparent to the NCDEQ - Division
of Water Resources that SGWASA is actively working to minimize such events in the future. I
hope that you take this into account as you determine what actions you might be taking regarding
the sanitary sewer overflows that have occurred, as outlined above.
