Using Schuler"Simple Method":
Rv = 0.05 + 0.0090) where I=percent impervious
Rv = 0.364 in/in
Control Volume = Design Rainfall x Rv x Drainage Area
= 1 in x 0.364 in/in x 6.0 AC(261,360 SE)
= 2.18 acre-in or 0.18 acre-feet or 7,927.9 CF say 7,930 CF
5- Determine Depth of Storage
Depth required to provide 7930 CF in irregular shaped pond is determined to be 1.43'.
Therefore:
Normal Pond Surface Area: 4,830 SF
Control Volume Surface Area: 6,240 SF
6- Determine Orifice Size
Control volume must be drawn down over a period of two to five days:
Q, =7,930 CF / (2 days x 86,400 seconds per day)
=0.046 cfs
Q, =7,930 CF / (5 days x 86,400 seconds per day)
=0.018 cfs
Using orifice equation(rearranged to solve for diameter):
D = (Q / 0.026(h)`n)K
ass c h=1()'(normal depth)+'A(1.45xstorage dLTth)
D, _ (.046 cfs/0.026(1.72)
D, = 1.16"
D, _ (.018 cfs/OM6(1.72)")`
Ds =0.73„
Usel I"diameter orifice
7- Primary Outlet
Primary outlet shall be a 36' CMP installed vertically as a weir structure to pass the 10 year design
storm. The 10 year peak discharge(Q.)is computed using the Rational formula as follows:
Q, - CIA
where: C=0.45
l,_5.74 in/hr(Wilmington IDF curve w/tc=15 min.)
A =6.0 Ac
Q,o=(0.45)x(5.74)x(6.0)
= 15.5 cfs
Assuming'h of the entire circumference of 36" CMP is used as weir,flow per foot of weir
may be computed as follows:
Flow per foot =15.5 cfs / ((36"/ 12) x PI/2)
=3.28 cfs/foot
Using sharp crested weir tables(copy attached):
where: h=observed head
p=6(pond depth)
h=0.99,
8- Emergency Spillway
Elevation of the emergency spillway shall be set at the depth of flow of the 100 year storm over the primary
outlet. The 100-year peak discharge(Q.)is computed using the Rational formula as follows:
Q,,= CIA
where: C=0.45
l,.= 7.5 in/hr(Wilmington IDF curve w/tc= 15 min)
A =6.0 Ac
Ql.=(0.45)x(7.5)x(6.00)
=20.25 cfs
Assuming '/z of the entire circumference of 36"CMP is used as weir, flow per foot of weir
may be computed as follows:
Flow per foot =20.25 cfs / ((36"/ 12) x PI/2)
=4.30 cfs/foot
Using sharp crested weir tables(copy attached):
where: b=observed head
p=6(pond depth)
h=1.18'
Emergency spillway shall be a broad crested earthen weir designed to pass the 100 year storm(in case
primary outlet blocked or overwhelmed):
Using the broad crested weir equation(rearranged for H):
H=(Q/Cw x L)'
where: Q =20.25 cfs
C„. = weir coefficient(3.0)
L = length of weir(ft)(try 40')
H =depth
H = 0.30'
9- Forebay
Forebay shall include 20%of pond volume:
Forebay volume = 11,380 CF x 20%
=2,276 CF(2,980 SF provided)
10- Summary
Elevations(assuming bottom=Elev. 33 48)
