Iredell County, NC
The above proposed facility consists of a convenience store,
restaurant and a motel located on a 12.555 acres site on Stamey
Farm Road (SR 1512) and Interstate 40 about two miles West of
the city limits of Statesville.
The convenience store and restaurant will be housed in one build-
ing containing 17,500 square feet. The store will consist of a
sales area, game room, office, cool storage, dry storage, lounge,
laundry room, shower room, restrooms, and furnace room. The
proposed restaurant will seat 200 people. The proposed motel will
consist of 100 rooms. The site will have ample parking for cars
and trucks. The total daily design flow is anticipated to be
25,000 gallons per day.
In May and June, our firm submitted detailed plans and specifica-
tions for a nitrification system to serve the convenience store
and the restaurant. During the course of the review of the plans
and specifications by the Division of Health Services of the
North Carolina Department of Human Resources, the Department's
Soils Consultant determined that the majority of the proposed
site was unsuitable for a nitrification sewage disposal system.
At this time our firm has prepared documentation to gain approval
of an Application for Permit to Discharge into the waters of
Third Creek at the point it crosses Interstate 40 about 4500
feet East of the proposed site as indicated on the attached copy
of the Statesville West, N.C. Quadrangle Map.

Dear Gerald:
This letter Is in response to your request for written documentation of
the soils/sewage disposal concerns at the truck stop facility being constructed
by Gene Davis at a site on Stamey Farm Road.
Al Slagle, Soils Consultant with the North Carolina Department of Human
Resources visited the site on July 13, 1989 at the request of Steven Berkowitz
of our Raleigh office. Steve was busy reviewing your engineered plans for
sewage disposal facilities to serve the truck stop complex at that time. It
was Mr. Slaglets opinion that the large majority of the site proposed for
septic system drainfield area was fill dirt and subsequently unsuitable for
use. Mr. Slagle did not feel that there was a sufficient area of suitable soil
on site to accomodate a system large enough to handle Mr,. Davlst proposed
development.
i hope this letter satisfies your Immediate'requirements.
Sincerely,
