Stormwater Outfall 003
Ms. Eplin:
In accordance with General Permit NO. NCG020000 Vulcan Materials Company, LLC(Vulcan) is
submitting notification within the two weeks of receipt(March 9, 2023) of analytical results indicating
an exceedance of a benchmark value as outlined in Part F Table 2 and Section F-5. In this case our
Outfall 003 turbidity results indicated a result of 87.3 NTU.
Vulcan is in the process of implementing the Tier One response requirements for turbidity exceedance,
in as detailed in Part F,Table 5 of General Permit No. NCG020000. On March 16, 2023, Chandler
Wooten of Vulcan and myself attempted to identify and evaluate the possible causes of the benchmark
exceedance on March 3, 2023. From this evaluation,we believe that the source of the higher turbidity
may have been the result of overburden and tree removal to expand the pit. Runoff from this area is
controlled through the use of check dams and pipe leading to the Outfall. Vulcan has diverted runoff
from pit expansion drainage area to the pit . The facility plans to take another sample during the next
qualified storm event.
Documentation of all responses and corrective actions performed in accordance with the Tier One
requirements for turbidity will be maintained with the facility's Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan.
