I appreciate your assistance during the inspection. The well is used for geothermal heat exchange only. During the inspection, the geothermal system was in operation. The well and exposed well piping was covered with a fiberglass rock, and the well pad and piping was in good condition, with no leaks observed. The wellhead appeared to be secure. A loose well identification plate was observed (Attachment 1). The influent and effluent piping was not labeled, but the effluent line was immediately apparent, given that it had a separate shutoff to prevent discharge to the well (Attachment 1). Influent (W1-I) and effluent (W1-E) water samples were collected from the sample ports at the well head. Both sample ports were disinfected with a 70-90% isopropyl solution prior to sampling. Samples were collected directly from the sample ports following disinfection. Groundwater quality (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and salinity) was measured in the field (Attachment 2). The measurements are relatively similar between the well effluent and the system discharge. Samples were delivered to the Division of Water Resources Laboratory on January 4, 2024. Laboratory analytical results were returned on March 13, 2024 (Attachment 3). Concentrations of the constituents analyzed were below the North Carolina Groundwater Standards (NCAC 15A.02L), with the exception of manganese. Constituent concentrations in influent and effluent samples were essentially the same, and at a similar concentration to that detected during previous sampling in 2018 and 2013, although manganese was below the groundwater standard in the samples collected in 2008, when the system was installed. Samples for ammonia, nitrate/nitrite as nitrogen, phosphorous, total kjeldahl nitrogen, bromide, chloride, fluoride, sulfate, and total dissolved solids are flagged as being out of temperature limits. This occurred because of a power failure in the laboratory, which allowed the samples to rise above the temperature limit. While this is not optimal, it does not appear to have affected the quality of the analytical results, and the concentration of these constituents was similar to those from previous sampling events. Elevated manganese is not unusual in groundwater in North Carolina, and given that this constituent was detected at elevated concentrations during previous sampling events, it does not appear that it represents a concern. Based on the inspection of the well head, and the laboratory analytical results for the samples collected, the continued use of the well for geothermal heat exchange is appropriate. We appreciate your assistance during the inspection, and if you have any questions regarding this report DocuSign Envelope ID: 7C8AC0FD-A534-4903-B92C-2A8266046A01 North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Division of Water Resources Raleigh Regional Office 3800 Barrett Drive Raleigh, North Carolina 27609 919.791.4200 or its conclusions, please contact Michael Hall at (919) 791-4237 or via email at michael.hall@deq.nc.gov.
