On April 10, 2024, Carolina Water Service, Inc. of NC received a notice of violation for total nitrogen monthly average exceedance, reporting violation for chloride, and reporting violation for total dissolved solids. The cause of the monthly average total nitrogen exceedance remains unknown. To ensure future wastewater treatment effluent compliance staff has diligently focused on various aspects of the wastewater treatment plant processes. These include monitoring activated sludge wasting rates, aeration dissolved oxygen (D.O.) levels, anoxic zone D.O. levels, and activated sludge recirculation rates. As a result of increased vigilance, there has been a significant reduction in total nitrogen effluent discharges. Notably, the total nitrogen effluent complied with regulations for December 2023, January 2024, and February 2024. Additionally, chloride and total dissolved samples were collected. Unfortunately, these sample results were inadvertently omitted from the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Discharge Monitoring Report (NDMR). However, the missing data has now been included, and the NDMR report has been resubmitted. Moving forward, the staff will exercise extra caution to prevent any reporting violations in future reports.
