Re: Bypass ofdenitrifzcation filters, April 6,2024. Incident #202400769
Dear Mr. Bullock:
On April 6 2024, the City of Kinston had to bypass part of its treatment process (the denitrification
filters).
On April 3, we started the drawdown of the peak flow basins. All basins remained in service at the
beginning of this process. On that Friday, April 5, the sludge depths had increased to levels forcing the
operator to stop the drawdown at 5:05 pm, During the Midnight to Noon shift, sludge depths remain
steady but clarifier 93 increased slightly. At 10:55 am, we began to experience heavy pin flocking from
clarifier 93. Once this occurred, we had to start bypassing the filters. As you are aware, the filters are
the last stage of treatment prior to UV disinfection and final discharge to the Neuse River.
The State (Mr. Bullock) was notified around 4:00 pm.
Total gallons wasted from the clarifiers for the month of March was 296,999 gallons. The total gallons
wasted for April was 196,599 gallons.
Filters were put back on line at 8:34 am, Tuesday, April 12, 2024.
Data available so far:
TSS for April 7, 2024 is 620 mg/L
TSS for April 8, 2024 is 645 mg/L.
TSS for April 9, 2024 is 126.1 mg/L
Solids within the basin remain constant with where we should be at this time of year. We are at full
operations with our dewatering and sludge removal.
