In reviewing the above -referenced project, I have a few recommendations.
1. Tall fescue, which is a non-native species with invasive tendencies, is listed in the seeding plan. We do not
recommend this species. I have attached a list of alternatives, native species. We propose changing the
specification from tall fescue to Ernst Seed MIX number ERNMX-310 (NC steep slope mix), which we have
verified as containing only native herbaceous species.
2. The seeding plan also has a riparian mix. Please ensure all the species in the riparian mix are native to the
Piedmont of NC. Feel free to contact me for suggestions. We have verified that the specified riparian seed mix
contains only native species.
3. Ensure coir matting is used in upland areas as well, since erosion control matting made of plastic mesh or twine
can injure or kill wildlife. Coir matting is specified for all slopes to be disturbed. Flat areas will be seeded and
strawed. No plastic matting will be used onsite.
4. Tree clearing activities should occur outside the "active season" (April 1—November 14) for the tricolored bat.
Conducting tree clearing activities during the winter avoids impacting bats roosting in trees, particularly during

the maternity season (June —July). We are following the proposed listing of tricolored bat. Should the
tricolored bat be listed by USFWS, the project will comply with federal requirements for protection of the bat.
