I've seen similar occurrences in Div 9. The scour you refer to looks like a headcut and will likely get worse because of the
clayey substrate. We may want to consider a grade control structure to prevent further upstream migration. I'm ok
with waiting to determine how subsequent storms impact the scour/headcut area and proceed from there. Thanks.

Subject: TIP P-5204, Guilford County
Importance: High
Good morning!
I was asked to go and look at Site 1 for the above TIP project (SR 2819 [McLeansville Rd.] Grade Separation over
NS/NCRR from SR 2826 to North of SR 2746). Site 1 called for the installation of a pipe crossing for the relocated portion
of the road (see attached photos). The pipe was installed and water turned into it about a month or so ago. In two
areas on the upstream, inlet end there appears to be some scour that has developed (which Barry noted in his recent
report). I've attached pictures - the first one is immediately adjacent to the newly created bank (approximately 1 foot
across and about 6-8 inches deep); the second is located just about at the corner where the wing wall and head wall join
(about 8" wide and 6"deep). I've also attached other pictures of the upstream and downstream ends so that you have a
frame of reference for the system as it is.
As this area is still "stabilizing", it was my thought that we should monitor these two pockets and see if mother nature
rights them herself. If the bank appears to be undercutting or the scour at the wing wall/headwall gets worse, then I
suggest placing some Class A rip rap (smaller, softball sized pieces) into the two scour areas just to the elevation of the
stream bed and allow them to sediment in over time. Please note that these areas in the upstream end are all part of
the permitted area (in other words, DOT would not be exceeding their permitted limits).
Please let me know your thoughts on this approach, or, feel free to suggest some other options that you believe would
be more appropriate.
Thanks so much!
Nikki
