Subject: Review of Duke Energy's Mayo Steam Electric Plant (NC0038377): Environmental
Monitoring Report (2022).
Dear Mr. Talbott:
Thank you for your submission of the aforementioned document. Based on a review of the
information provided to us, we find fisheries data are consistent with historic trends for all trace
elements (i.e., Hg, Se, As) and are all below State and Federal screening values.
In addition, based on a review of the limnological parameters provided to us, we similarly find
that nutrient concentrations observed by Duke Energy remain consistent with those reported
previously and with values measured by DWR from routine lake monitoring efforts in the
past. Selenium concentrations in this reservoir remain low overall, and the concentration trends
of higher values near the outfalls remains consistent with those measured by DWR. Physical
parameters (i.e., dissolved oxygen, water temperature, pH and conductivity) were also within
ranges observed by DWR.
If you have any questions regarding these comments, please do not hesitate to contact.
me.
Sincerely,
Chris Johnson
