Annual Avg Daily Traffic (veh/hr/day): Design/Future: 150 1 Year: 2024 I Existing: 1 150 Year: 2024 General Project Narrative: NCDOT Project SF-560036 involves the replacement of Structure 560036 over Middle Fork Creek on SR 1515 (Buckner Branch Road) in Madison County, NC northeast of Mars (Description of Minimization of Water Hill. The subject crossing involves the replacement of an existing 35' long by 21' wide (timber deck on steel I -beams) single -span bridge with a proposed 55' long by 30' wide, Quality Impacts) 21" Cored Slab single -span bridge. The proposed grade will be about 1-1.5' above existing grade within the vicinity of the bridge and roughly matching existing grade approximately 175 ft west and 240 ft east of the bridge. The existing bridge has vertical abutments extending within the footprint of Middle Fork Creek which are proposed to be removed. Abutments of the proposed bridge are located completely outside the streambanks. The existing bridge has openings in the bridge rail so runoff discharges directly into Middle Fork Creek. The proposed bridge will have no direct discharge into the creek. Stormwater runoff is to flow to the northwest and northeast quadrants of the bridge where it will sheet flow over the paved shoulders away from the bridge. It will then be diffused by the grassed shoulder and bridge rip rap before reaching the stream. All proposed stormwater runoff is discharged as far away from the stream and at the lowest velocities as practicable. The NCDOT Mitigation Site Boundary shown in the northeast quadrant of this project is a preservation site associated with past NCDOT project R-2518A. The site is identified as R-2518A Middle Fork Creek Site K. The current project proposes to avoid this preservation site completely. A channel change is proposed in the southwest quadrant to realign a portion of stream SA. All impacts on the project have been minimized to the maximum extent practical. "Note that Middle Fork Creek is also known as Middle Fork Little Ivy Creek (NCDEQ) and Middle Fork California Creek (FEMA). Middle Fork Creek is stream name per NCDOT structure inventory.
