Page 11 of 11 Hood Richardson, PA C576 110 West Second Street Washington, N. C. 27889 252-975-3472 February 26, 2024 NARATI VE NCG020000 NOTICE OF INTENT TRIPPLE A MINE CRAVEN COUNTY This is a proposal to dewater the surface workings of a sand mine located at the headwaters of a small branch off Swift Creek. This sand has a very low content of silt with no detectable clay. The sand is evenly graded with a very high percolation rate, in excess of 20 inches per hour according to the USDA Soil Conservation Service. This makes dewatering by pumping off site the only practical method of lowering the surface water table in order to excavate sand. Water travels from the pump located in the mine pit(excavation) by pipe and then a ditch into a settling basin, then across a level spreader and then into wetlands which feed the branch, then into Swift Creek. Best storm water management practices are achieved by surface water from disturbed areas being directed into the mine excavation which is the first settling pond. Because of the high permeability of these sands, rainwater rarely arrives at the pit. The significant source of water at this site is ground water which accumulates in the mine pit. There is no surface or off site source of water other than rain. Treatment of pumped water consists of settling in the pit and then in the settling basin prior to crossing the level spreader and flowing into the wetlands. There are no ditches or streams flowing into or across this 80 acre tract of land. Wetlands located inside this 80 acre tract are the headwaters of the branch flowing into Swift Creek. There are no ditches or swales collecting flowing water in the areas being mined. Rainwater percolates into the ground. Corps of Engineers wetlands were delineated and are shown on the mine mapys which Ire a part of this notice. There are isolated wetlands on this property. Wetl tectiyd by a 50 foot wide undisturbed buffer. Consideration is being given to mio72tpd wetlands after consultation with State and Federal authorities t 4 .. Hood L.
