RECOMMENDED SEQUENCE OF CONSTRUCTION
1. LOCATE OR SET CONTROL POINTS SUCH THAT THEY ARE VISIBLE AND CAN BE
RE-ESTABLISHED.
2. FLAG CLEARING LIMITS, LOCATE PROPERTY CORNER PINS, RIGHT OF WAY, AND
UTILITIES TO ENSURE THEY ARE NOT DISTURBED DURING THE COURSE OF THE
PROJECT.
3. INSTALL THE AERATION SYSTEM PUMP AS SHOWN ON THE SHORELINE, PLACE
AIR DISTRIBUTION TUBES IN THE LAKE, AND START THE AERATION OPERATIONS.
PERFORM AERATION FOR AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR TO LOWERING POOL.
4. INSTALL SILT FENCE AND PERIMETER CONTROLS AS SHOWN ON PLAN.
5. TRAFFIC SHALL BE MAINTAINED ON THE ROAD ACROSS THE TOP OF THE DAM.
6. INSTALL SAFETY FENCE AND PEDESTRIAN INFORMATION SIGNS.
7. THE LAKE VOLUME WILL NEED TO BE DRAINED TO PERFORM THE REPAIR SINCE
THE 36 INCH LOW LEVEL DRAIN AND THE 60 INCH UPSTREAM INLETS MUST BE
ACCESSED AT THE LAKE BOTTOM. BEGIN DRAINING LAKE LEVEL BY OPENING
LOW LEVEL DRAIN VALVE. REGULATE THE AMOUNT OF VALVE OPENING TO
ENSURE THAT THE LAKE LEVEL IS LOWERED NO MORE THAN 1/2 FOOT PER DAY
UNTIL LAKE IS LOWERED APPROXIMATELY 3-4 FEETTHEN CLOSE VALVE.
8. SELECT A DAY WITH A FORECAST OF SEVERAL MORE DAYS WITHOUT RAIN AND
APPLY THE ROTENONE TREATMENT TO THE LAKE IN THE AFTERNOON; THEN
COLLECT AND DISPOSE OF THE FISH EARLY THE NEXT MORNING.
9. TEST ROTENONE LEVELS UNTIL HAS DIMINISHED TO SAFE LEVELS. IF NECESSARY,
APPLY COUNTERAGENT IF A RAIN EVENT OCCURS AND PRESENTS A RISK OF LAKE
LEVELS REFILLING TO NORMAL BEFORE TESTING VERIFIES THE WATER IS SAFE
AND THEN CONTINUE DRAINING THE LAKE.
10. WITH LAKE LEVEL DOWN WORK CAN COMMENCE ON CONSTRUCTION OF THE
WAVE PROTECTION ON THE DAM, PIEZOMETERS, REPAIRS ON BRIDGE 6, AND
THE SHORELINE FORTIFICATIONS AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE LAKE
ACCORDING TO THE DETAILS AND LOCATIONS SHOWN IN THE PLANS.
11. ONCE LAKE IS DRAINED, TAKE ALL NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS FOR CONFINED
SPACE ENTRY. REMOVE ALL DEBRIS FROM THE PRINCIPAL SPILLWAY TOWERS
AND UPSTREAM CONDUITS AND FLUSH WITH WATER IF NECESSARY TO CLEAN
THEM OUT.
12. INSPECT THE RISER TOWERS AND UPSTREAM CONDUITS AND NOTIFY THE
ENGINEER IF ANY DISCREPANCIES OR UNFORESEEN CONDITIONS ARE FOUND.
13. REMOVE THE DEBRIS GRATES ON THE OUTLET END OF THE PRINCIPAL SPILLWAY
CONDUIT BY SAW CUTTING OR TORCHING.
14. ONCE LAKE IS DRAINED PUMP LAKE LEVEL DOWN TO AT LEAST ELEVATION 271.0
IN ORDER TO CONSTRUCT A COFFERDAM AROUND LOW LEVEL DRAIN INLET AND
PRINCIPAL INLET CONDUITS TO FACILITATE SLIP LINING. CONTRACTOR MAY
CONSTRUCT COFFERDAM USING EARTH MATERIAL FROM THE LAKE BOTTOM OR
BRING IN TEMPORARY MATERIALS THAT SHALL BE REMOVED FROM THE LAKE
AREA WHEN NO LONGER NEEDED, I.E. PORT -A -DAM, SUPER SACKS, ETC.
15. PROVIDE A 12" LOW FLOW PIPE THROUGH THE COFFERDAM WITH A VALVE TO
CONTROL FLOW AS SHOWN. MAINTAIN THE DRAINED LAKE LEVEL BY ALLOWING
NORMAL DAILY FLOW THROUGH THE 12" PIPE AND DIRECTING INTO THE LOW
LEVEL DRAIN.
16. TAKE ALL NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS FOR CONFINED SPACE ENTRY. REMOVE ALL
DEBRIS FROM THE PRINCIPAL SPILLWAY TOWERS AND DOWNSTREAM CONDUITS
AND FLUSH WITH WATER IF NECESSARY TO CLEAN THEM OUT.
17. SLIP LINE THE (2) 60" DIA SPILLWAY UPSTREAM INLET CONDUITS WITH 54" HDPE
DR-26 PIPE. CENTERING SPACERS SHALL BE USED TO ADEQUATELY CENTER THE
PIPE. THE INLET SLIP LINE SHALL BE INSTALLED FROM THE UPSTREAM END.
EACH WELD JOINT SHALL BE TRIMMED AND SOLIDLY FUSED TOGETHER
ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATION. INSPECT THE PIPES
AFTER INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE TO ENSURE THERE ARE NO ANOMALIES TO BE
CORRECTED.
18. CLOSE VALVE ON 12" LOW FLOW PIPE IN COFFERDAM AND DEWATER WORK
AREA FOR LOW LEVEL DRAIN SLIP LINING.
19. SLIP LINE THE 36" DIA LOW LEVEL DRAIN CONDUIT WITH A 30" DIA HDPE DR-26
PIPE WITHOUT ALTERING THE VALVE THAT IS INSIDE THE TOWER. CENTERING
SPACERS SHALL BE USED TO ADEQUATELY CENTER THE PIPE.
20. INSTALL NON -SHRINK GROUT BULKHEAD AT EACH END OF THE LOW LEVEL DRAIN
CONDUIT AND AT EACH END OF THE UPSTREAM INLET CONDUITS WITH ONE
VENT PIPE TERMINATING 1 FT ABOVE THE CROWN OF EACH PIPE.
21. GROUT ANNULAR SPACE IN LOW LEVEL DRAIN CONDUIT AND THE UPSTREAM
INLET CONDUITS IN SUCH A MANOR TO NOT OVERWHELM BULKHEADS UNTIL
GROUT HAS CURED. DUE TO THE SLOPE OF THE UPSTREAM INLET CONDUIT THE
GROUT MAY NEED TO BE DONE IN STAGES.
22. ONCE THE LOW LEVEL DRAIN CONDUIT SLIP LINE GROUT HAS CURED THE
COFFERDAM AND/OR PUMP CAN BE REMOVED. MOVE EQUIPMENT OUT OF
LAKE AREA AND RESTORE ANY DAMAGE TO THE SHORELINE ACCESS LOCATION.
23. ONCE COFFERDAM HAS BEEN REMOVED AND WITH APPROVAL OF ENGINEER,
CLOSE LOW LEVEL DRAIN VALVE AND ALLOW LAKE TO REFILL. CONTRACTOR
SHALL MONITOR LAKE LEVEL WITH REGARDS TO THE SHORELINE
FORTIFICATIONS. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE FORTIFICATIONS CAN BE COMPLETED
PRIOR TO RESTORATION OF NORMAL POOL. IF NOT, THE LAKE LEVEL SHALL BE
MAINTAINED AT 4 FT BELOW NORMAL POOL UNTIL THE SHORELINE
FORTIFICATIONS ARE COMPLETE.
NO PHOTOGRAPHS OR VIDEO OF
GOVERNMENT STAFF IS PERMITTED.

24. PRIOR TO THE LAKE REACHING NORMAL POOL DEMOLITION OF THE SLAB
AROUND THE OUTLET CONDUITS SHALL BE PERFORMED EXPOSING THE OUTLET
CONDUITS.
25. APPROXIMATELY 20 FT OF THE EARTH ADJACENT TO THE OUTLET CONDUITS
SHALL BE EXCAVATED.
26. REMOVE APPROXIMATELY 20 FT OF THE EXISTING OUTLET CONDUITS.
27. REMOVE ANY DEBRIS FROM OUTLET CONDUITS AND FLUSH WITH WATER IF
NECESSARY TO CLEAN THEM OUT.
28. INSPECT THE RISER TOWERS AND DOWNSTREAM CONDUITS AND NOTIFY THE
ENGINEER IF ANY DISCREPANCIES OR UNFORESEEN CONDITIONS ARE FOUND.
29. SLIP LINE THE 60" DIA SPILLWAY DOWNSTREAM OUTLET CONDUITS WITH 54"
O.D. HDPE DR-32 PIPE. CENTERING SPACERS SHALL BE USED TO ADEQUATELY
CENTER THE PIPE. THE OUTLET SLIP LINE SHALL BE INSTALLED FROM
DOWNSTREAM END.
30. INSTALL NON -SHRINK GROUT BULKHEAD AT EACH END OF OUTLET CONDUITS
WITH ONE VENT PIPE TERMINATING 1 FT ABOVE THE CROWN OF EACH PIPE.
31. GROUT ANNULAR SPACE IN OUTLET CONDUITS BETWEEN THE EXISTING AND
NEW PIPE FILLING FROM THE LOWER END TO THE TOWER END. MULTIPLE
GROUT SUPPLY PIPES WITH VARYING OUTLET LOCATIONS WILL BE NECESSARY
TO ENSURE COMPLETE FILLING OF THE ANNULAR SPACE. CLOSELY MONITOR
GROUT PRESSURES TO ENSURE PROTECTION OF THE DAM EMBANKMENT.
32. GRADED SAND FILTER MEDIA SHALL BE INSTALLED AT THE END OF THE EXISTING
CONDUITS AND BACKFILLED BACK TO PREVIOUS LIMITS.
33. A NEW REINFORCED CONCRETE SLAB SHALL BE CAST AROUND THE NEW 54"
OUTLET CONDUITS IN THE SAME LOCATION AS THE ORIGINAL.
34. REINSTALL PREVIOUSLY REMOVED OR PROVIDE NEW DEBRIS GRATES ON THE
END OF THE NEW 54" OUTLET CONDUITS.
35. ONCE ALL OF THE SHORELINE FORTIFICATIONS, RIP RAP ARMOR, AND BRIDGE 6
REPAIRS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED, THE LAKE LEVEL SHALL BE ALLOWED TO
RETURN TO NORMAL POOL ELEVATION.
36. ANY DAMAGE TO THE EXISTING ROADWAY AND PEDESTRIAN PATH SHALL BE
REPAIRED TO ORIGINAL DESIGN AND SPECIFICATION PRIOR TO VACATING THE
SITE.
37. CLEAN UP AND DEMOBILIZE.

2. IF MORE THAN 20,000 SQ. FT. IS DISTURBED , A SEDIMENTATION AND EROSION
CONTROL PLAN MUST BE SUBMITTED AND APPROVED PRIOR TO THE ISSUANCE OF A
LAND -DISTURBANCE PERMIT.
3. TREE PROTECTION IS REQUIRED BY THE CITY/ COUNTY PLANNING DEPARTMENT, TREE
PROTECTION CERTIFICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE DURHAM COUNTY
EROSION CONTROL DIVISION, AND TREE PROTECTION INSPECTION COMPLETED PRIOR
TO LAND -DISTURBANCE PERMIT ISSUANCE.
4. IF AN OFFSITE SPOIL OR BORROW SITE IS UTILIZED, THE DISTURBED AREA MUST BE
INCLUDED IN THE LAND DISTURBANCE PLAN AND PERMIT UNLESS ALREADY
PERMITTED.

CLEANOUT OF ANY STRUCTURES USED TO TRAP SEDIMENT. ALL MATERIALS SPILLED, DROPPED, WASHED, OR TRACKED FROM VEHICLES ONTO ROADWAYS ON
INTO STORM DRAINS MUST BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY. THE USE OF WATER TRUCKS TO REMOVE MATERIAL DROPPED, WASHED, OR TRACKED ONTO ROADWAYS

SEDIMENT DEPOSITION REACHES HALF WAY TO THE TOP OF THE BARRIER. ALL DAMAGES SHALL BE REPAIRED IMMEDIATELY.
C. SEEDED AREAS SHALL BE CHECKED TO ENSURE THAT A GOOD STAND IS MAINTAINED. AREAS SHALL BE FERTILIZED AND RESEEDED AS NEEDED.
D. ALL MULCHES AND SOIL COVERINGS SHOULD BE INSPECTED PERIODICALLY TO CHECK FOR EROSION. WHERE EROSION IS OBSERVED IN MULCHED AREAS,
ADDITIONAL MULCH SHOULD BE APPLIED. NETS AND MATS SH OUDL BE INSPECTED AFTER RAINSTORMS FOR DISLOCATION OR FAILURE. IF WASHOUTS OR
