A foam rope like material gets inserted in the cracks between the slabs to retain the concrete during grouting. This material came loose in one location about 2 feet long and the concrete went through the crack there. I'm guessing that we lost less than 1 gallon of concrete. Considering that amount and considering how much water is flowing under the bridge, I'd be shocked if anything was severely impacted by the event. The contractor has a man going right ahead of the concrete pour now to make sure everything is in place before grouting. The incident was noted in the NPDES report. As soon as it is possible, let me know the extent of the loss (amount lost and removed from the stream and damage to aquatic resources) and what measures will be taken to prevent this from occurring in the future on this and other similar projects. I haven't been there yet but as I understand things, they were grouting the cored slabs and concrete squirted out between the slabs. They are shut down and are installing backer rod. That's all I know right now.
