The permittee, Ben Adler, was present during the inspection, and identified the location of the well. The well is used for geothermal heat exchange only. During the inspection, the geothermal system was in operation. The well and exposed well piping was covered with a fiberglass rock, had clearly been replaced since the previous inspection, and was in good condition, with no leaks observed. The wellhead appeared to be secure. No well identification plate was observed. The influent and effluent piping was not labeled, but the inspector labeled them in the field prior to taking photographs (Attachment 1). Influent (W1-I) and effluent (W1-E) water samples were collected from the sample ports at the well head. Both sample ports were disinfected with a 70% isopropyl solution prior to sampling. Samples were collected directly from the sample ports following disinfection. Groundwater quality (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and salinity) was measured in the field (Attachment 2). The measurements are relatively similar between the well effluent and the system discharge. Samples were delivered to the Division of Water Resources Laboratory on January 3, 2024. Laboratory analytical results were returned on February 13, 2024 (Attachment 3). Concentrations of the constituents analyzed were below the North Carolina Groundwater Standards (NCAC 15A.02L). The concentration of the constituents analyzed were relatively similar between the influent and effluent samples, with the exception of iron, which was slightly higher in the effluent sample. Samples for nitrate/nitrite as nitrogen, bromide, chloride, fluoride, sulfate, and total dissolved solids are flagged as being out of temperature limits. This occurred because of a power failure in the laboratory, which allowed the samples to rise above the temperature limit. While this is not optimal, it does not appear to have affected the quality of the analytical results, and concentration of these constituents was similar to those from previous sampling events. Neither the field measurements or the laboratory results suggest a concern regarding groundwater quality. The slight increase in the concentration of iron in the effluent from the system may indicate minor corrosion of metal components, but does not represent an impact to groundwater. Based on the inspection of the well head, and the laboratory analytical results for the samples collected, the continued use of the well for geothermal heat exchange is appropriate. We appreciate your assistance during the inspection, and if you have any questions regarding this report or its conclusions, please contact Michael Hall at (919) 791-4237 or via email at michael.hall@deq.nc.gov.
