NOTICE OF DISCHARGE OF UNTREATED SEWAGE
Winter Storm Finn caused heavy sustained rain on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, leading to Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District having one wastewater collection system spill. In this instance,
a total wastewater spill of approximately 16,250 gallons spilled from the wastewater collection system from Manhole A54, sub-basin ‘A’, located at Land St and an unopened portion of
W. 4th St. The spill began January 9, 2024 at 7:50 p.m. and ended at 1:15 a.m. the following day. Approximately 16,250 gallons of untreated wastewater discharged into the waters of
the state tributary to the Roanoke River in the Roanoke River Basin. Inflow into the sewer collection system exceeded the carrying capacity of the pipes. Preparation is being made for
all known repairs necessary to reduce the source of inflow to return the pipe system to service and minimize further discharge.
This notice is required by North Carolina General Statutes Article 21 Chapter 143.215.1C.
