5. Type of treatment plant: •
® Conventional (Includes coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation, usually followed by
filtration and disinfection)
❑ Ion Exchange (Sodium Cycle Cationic ion exchange)
❑ Green Sand Filter (No sodium recharge)
❑ Membrane Technology (RO, nanofiltration)
Check here if the treatment process also uses a water softener ❑
6. Description of source water(s) (i.e. groundwater, surface water)
Surface water taken from the Mills River and its tributaries.
7. Describe the treatment process(es)for the raw water: See Attached Schematic
Water is taken from Mills River and tributaries, coagulant and caustic added at head of
plant. Moves through flocculators and settling basins and just prior to the filters chlorine
gas and water are introduced into the flow. Water and chemistry pass's through the filters
to the exit point of the building where chlorine, orthophosphate, fluoride is added before
entering the clear well. Water is taken from clear well as needed and sodium bicarbonate
is added as water is discharged into the distribution system.
8. Describe the wastewater and the treatment process(es)for wastewater generated by the
facility:Also See Attached Schematic
Waste water is generated from the backwashing, cleaning of basins as well as the sampling
process in the plant. All water flows into a common storage area where it is collected to a
predetermined level at which time the transfer pump comes on, a solution of sodium
thiosulfate is introduced to DE chlorinate the water. The DE chlorinated solution is
pumped into one or two clarifiers (most of the time it is one). The liquid is decanted out of
the clarifiers into the receiving stream Brandy Branch.

Outfall Identification number(s) 001
