Unauthorized Bypass
Dear Mr. Pattillo:
At approximately 10:00 AM on January 9, 2024, the static screens at the discharge of the Bryson City WWTP's
influent pump station became clogged due to high flows and debris in the line from heavy rainfall leading to
increased inflow/infiltration. Dale Howard Wike (ORC, Environmental Inc.) contacted Lauren Armeni (Asheville
Regional Office, Division of Water Resources, Environmental Specialist II) at 11:32 AM on January 9, 2024 to
report the incident. The clogging of the static screens caused an unauthorized bypass of untreated sewage from
the influent pump station onto the ground with none reaching Surface waters. The violation that occurred is
summarized below:

a written response to this Notice of Violation. Your response is to be received by the regional office within 15
business days following receipt of this violation. Please include any additional documentation about this incident
in the response and include the steps that will be taken to prevent this type of illegal discharge from happening in
the future.
