SGWASA received the December 14, 2023 NOV-2023-DV-0427 notification letter from NCDEQ on December 20, 2023. Due to my absence from the office related to an illness, I did not receive/open the letter until 1/10/24. Following is an overview and response by SGWASA to the incident. Incident No. 202301565 (11/16/2023): Pump Station at 703 E. F Street, Butner, NC The overflow at this location was due to a buildup of debris in the main sewer line. The debris, as noted on the initial report was due to utility customers flushing objects down the toilets. These objects included t-shirts, bed sheets, plastic bottles, and trash bags, just to name a few. SGWASA utility crews responded quickly to the overflow event and cleaned up the area accordingly. Following the event, Crews inspected, cleaned and applied lime to the area affected. Based on the circumstances causing this overflow event, SGWASA submits that this discharge was caused by factors beyond the reasonable control of SGWASA and could not have been prevented by the exercise of reasonable control. Due to the cause related to this event, SGWASA utility staff will increase the monitoring of the sewer collection system in the area and take proactive measures, as necessary, to mitigate future sewer overflow events in the immediate area. Based on the information presented in this letter, I hope it is apparent to the NCDEQ - Division of Water Resources that SGWASA is actively working to minimize such events in the future. I hope that you take this into account as you determine what actions you might be taking regarding the sanitary sewer overflows that have occurred, as outlined above. 2 I look forward to discussing this information further with you. Please contact me at your convenience. Sincerely, Scott N. Schroyer Scott N. Schroyer, Executive Director South Granville Water and Sewer Authority (SGWASA) 415 Central Avenue, Suite B.
