Dear Ms. Manuel,
Carolina Water Service, Inc. of NC (CWSNC) is in receipt of the above-mentioned Notice of Violation dated
December 13th and provides additional information below.
CWSNC had a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) event on November 11th. The cause of the November 11th SSO of
10,000 gallons was caused by a blockage of rags and grease in the elevated sewer main at 1120 Mailwood Drive, to
Amber Acres Lift Station. The address on the NOV letter incorrectly states the address of the SSO, as 1116 Mailwood
Dr. CWSNC was notified by a customer at 9:00 AM that a manhole was overflowing. The SSO was confirmed, and a
contractor called onsite. The sewer main was jetted to clear the blockage, and the line cleared at 5:05 PM. The area
was cleaned/limed, and the surrounding lines were inspected to evaluate other potential problems. The sewer main
was last cleaned as part of CWSNC’s yearly 10% cleaning on April 19, 2021. The SSO did not reach any surface waters.
No fish kill occurred. No environmental impact was noted.
Carolina Water Service, Inc. of NC respectfully appreciates the opportunity to respond with additional
information for consideration of any further enforcement decisions concerning this matter. We hope the information
provided within this letter demonstrates the continued efforts to maintain compliance at the facility. If you have any
questions or if I can provide any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me at 919-868-4701 or by
email at Stephen.Harrell@carolinawaterservicenc.com .
Sincerely,
Stephen Harrell
