Has the clearing already occurred? What are the hashed areas on sheets 23 and 24, where it says "No embankment construction"? Will those areas be protected from tree removal and grading? What is the slope of the 120' pipe? Stepping up on a soap box - I have concerns regarding road paving projects, in general, especially in the mountains. On the surface the impacts seem small, but the practice of widening to general standards, without using context sensitive designs, leads to what I believe is unnecessary removal of mountainsides and hillsides and terrestrial disturbance. The more disturbance, the more sediment available to enter the waterways and the more wildlife habitat is destroyed. With the NLEB and other bats that use tree bark and hollow trees becoming a larger concern, tree removal and terrestrial impacts should be minimized where possible. Other rare wildlife species should also be considered. Changing a low-traveled, slow-traveled roadway to a wider, straighter road with wide shoulders and ditches could possibly have negative effect on safety, the opposite of the desired outcome. More vehicles will likely use the road and travel at faster speeds, making it less safe for the public and the wildlife accustom to crossing the roadway. I hope that one day NCDOT will routinely take these concerns and context of each project into consideration and design smaller, sensible projects that will have the added benefit of saving them a lot of money. — Off the soapbox. We recently acquired additional right-of-way to extend this project. We have a contractor ready to go to work now so anything you can do to expedite the permit issuance would be appreciated. I added the two new wet pipes to the previously permitted impact totals so everyone can just update their impact summaries instead of starting from scratch. Existing permits are attached as well.
