Description of Treatment Process
The Town of Waynesville W WTP Is a 6 MGD activated sludge treatment plant and includes influent flow
measurement, bar screen, primary clarifiers, gravity sludge thickeners aeration, secondary clarifiers,
gaseous chlorine disinfection, and gaseous sulfur dioxide dichlorination. Solids are belt filter pressed and
hauled to the White Oak Landfill. The treated wastewater is discharged into the Pigeon River under
permit number NC0025321.
Summery of Violations During 2022
The Town of Waynesville W WTP was issued NOVs for February, March, April, May, August, October,
November, And December. There was one NOD issued in January for a frequency violation on Bis(2-
Ethylhexyl) Phthalate - concentration (CO100). The NOVs were for TSS, BOD, Fecal coliform, and DO.
The NOVs received was due largely to the age of the plant. We are currently in the process of a nearly
30-million-dollar plant upgrade. This biggest culprit of failing the permit limit is the secondary clarifiers
are under sized and function poorly. The have -to -have extensive maintenance due to the engineered
design. Every effort is made to stay proactive of the maintenance, however there are still numerous
mechanical issue the must be handled reactively.
