Asheville Regional Office
Division of Water Resources, NCDEQ
Subject: NOV-2023-LV 0609
Mr. Boss,
Our ammonias were up and down in June and we were looking at possible reasons. We didn't
see a big jump until July. At that time we were looking closer at what could be causing the
increases. We were sampling influent, aeration, and leachate. When our sample results came
back, we found the ammonia increases to be coming from the leachate. At that time, we
stopped accepting leachate and began wasting heavily from aeration. Our ammonias were back
to historic levels, below 1mg/L the last week of July.
We have worked with the Haywood County Landfill for 12 years and have not had an issue with
Ammonia. We had the Landfill begin aerating their leachate lagoon and Ammonia levels
decreased to half or less of the levels noted when sampling began.
All of our August Ammonia samples are back to below 1 mg/L. We continue to keep an eye on
our numbers as well as the Haywood County Landfill Leachate number.
We did contact Lauren Armeni to let her know we were exceeding our Ammonia Limit. Mike
Mehaffey, our ORC, called her in mid July to let her know and talk some about the issue. Mike
also worked with Troy Cassidy the wastewater Technical Assistant with NC Rural Water.
Sincerely,
Vic /ieBest, Manager
