Dear Mr. Davidson:
I am writing in response to the above -referenced Notice of Violation. As reported, a portion of a broken
manhole cover blocked a manhole, causing a total spill estimated to be 1,000 gallons, with an
estimated 500 gallons reaching surface waters.
Remedial actions included the following. On the date of the spill discovery, May 03, 2023, the
overflowing manhole was reported at 4:25 PM. A private local company, Mayland Septic Company,
was called to pump out the overflowing manhole for visibility. A broken piece of manhole cover was
discovered blocking the sewer pipe. The obstruction was removed and sewer began to flow freely.
From the call -in to the Town utility department to removal of the obstruction was approximately 1.5
hours. The surrounding topsoil was removed and transported to our wastewater plant drying beds. The
remaining area was treated with lime. At 8:04 AM on May 04, 2023, the spill was reported to DWQ.
