Director Cheryle Pope 5621 Community Drive Durham, NC 27705 NORTH CAROLINA Envttnnmentad Quality October 6, 2023 Subject: Compliance Evaluation Inspection Single Family Wastewater Treatment System General NPDES Permit NCG550000 Certificate of coverage NCG551042 Facility: 5621 Commuity Dr., Durham Durham County Dear Ms. Pope, On June 6, 2023, Curtis Tyree from the Raleigh Regional Office visited your single-family residence (SFR) wastewater treatment system to evaluate compliance with the subject General NPDES Permit. Our records indicate the treatment system consists of a septic tank; a subsurface sand filter; a tablet chlorinator; a chlorine contact chamber; and an effluent discharge pipe. General NPDES Permit NCG550000 and Certificate of Coverage (COC) NCG551042 authorizes the discharge of domestic wastewater from your treatment system to an unnamed tributary to Crooked Creek in the Neuse River Basin. Findings during the inspection were as follows: L The septic tank shall be checked annually and pumped out every 3 to S years. McFarland Septic Service pumped the septic tank out in May of 2021. 2. Treatment system operation The treatment system shall be maintained at all times to Prevent seepage of sewage to the surface of the ground. The permittee has someone to inspect her system on a regular basis. 3. Chlorination The tablet chlorinator shall be inspected weekly to ensure there is an adequate supply of tablets for continuous and proper operation. Wastewater grade tablets (calcium hypochlorite) shall be added as needed to provide proper chlorination (swimming pool chlorine tablets shall not be used). At the time of the inspection, the chlorinator had a sufficient amount and type of tablets and Ms. Pope inspects the tubes often and adds chlorine tablets as needed. . - -Fw 15 OF North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality I Division of Water Resources Raleigh Regional Office I 3800 Barrett Dnve I Raleigh. North Carolina 2? d09 919 791 4200 4. Outfall location. A visual review of the outfall location shall be executed twice each year (one at the time of sampling) to ensure that no visible solids or other obvious evidence of system malfunctioning is observer. Any visible signs of a malfunctioning system shall be documented, and steps taken to correct the problem. At the time of the inspection, the outfall location was clear and appeared to be well maintained and free of any obstructions. There was no water discharging at the time of the inspection. 5. Effluent sampling requirements. Effluent sampling must be conducted annually as part of your permit requirements. The effluent samples must be analyzed by a North Caroline Certified Lab and the results must be kept on site for three years. Ms. Pope has not been able to collect a sample yet this year due to no flow to the outfall. The sample results from 2022 indicated that the system is working as designed and is in compliance. 6. Fees and renewals. COC's with unpaid administering and compliance monitoring fees will not be automatically renewed The fees must be paid annually and within 30 days of notification. All fees have been paid. If you have questions or comments about this inspection or the requirements of your permit, please contact Curtis Tyree via email at curtis&reecbdeo.nc.govov or 919-791-4251. Sincerely, Vanessa E.
