Unimin Corporation — Crystal Facility
Present Operating Status: Unimin Corporation — Crystal Facility is engaged in the extraction
and mineral processing to produce high purity quartz. The wastewater treatment plant consists of
mix -reactor tanks, lime and polymer feed systems, thickener, drum filter, pH adjustment, and flow
measurement. The plant is currently limiting flow to 384 gpm average.
The facility currently may add lime (Ca(OH)2), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), sodium bicarbonate
(Na2CO3) and Calcium Chloride (CaC12) as needed for pH control. The facility may add alum
(Al2(SO4)3), aluminum chlorohydrate (Al2C1(OH)5), anionic polymer and cationic polymer as
needed for flocculation. The facility may add alum, aluminum chlorohydrate and polymer as
needed for flocculation of the intake water. Small amounts of chlorine may also be added as
needed for disinfection of the intake water. Other chemicals used in the process at the main plant
include HF, HCI, caustic, and sodium thiosulfate. Oil and grease are possible from small amounts
of leaks and drips from mobile equipment.
Tailings Management: Tailings obtained from the wastewater treatment plant are not defined as
a solid waste and are not regulated by the Solid Waste Division. Wastes of this nature are returned
to the ore processing plants and disposed of in designated waste disposal areas covered under the
Mining Permits.
