Discharge to Waters of the State without a Permit
During the evening of September 20, 2023, pulp fiber was released from the
Patterson mill and entered the banks of the Yadkin River. This fiber was ground
up cardboard boxes that was free of treatment chemicals. I reported the incident to
Ms. Rachel Rose (Environmental Specialist) the morning of September 21. I then
discussed this incident with Ms. Rose and Ms. Lauren Armeni (Environmental
Specialist II) later that morning and supplied them with photos and video.
Later that day, after discussing the incident with Mr. Andrew Moore
(Environmental Specialist II) and Mr. Tyler Hickman (Environmental Specialist 1),
permission was given to remove fiber from the river. I contacted STAT
Environmental Services for the removal. STAT arranged for a Supersucker truck
and crew to remove the fiber_ After the job was completed, pictures of the cleaned
area were sent to Mr. Daniel Boss (Asst Reg. Supervisor), Ms. Rose, Mr.
Hickman, and Ms. Armeni.
Following the cleanup, we took the equipment out of service for repair that caused
the spill and secured the back of the building to prevent future releases.
