I isolated the radiologicals and put them on a separate tab. I labelled them "Rads" on the attached spreadsheet. The "Rads" were analyzed for about two years and there is not much of concern EXCEPT for the May, 2009 total gross alpha of 51 picocuries per liter. I believe that exceeds the drinking water standard, but may not represent a violation of their permit since the limit is based on an annual average. I could not find anything in the current permit that lists water supply well filter backwash as a source. It doesn't exclude it, either. I don't know if this activity (disposal of water filter backwash) would or should be considered "deemed permitted". RRO recommends that monitoring for gross alpha be added to the permit if disposal of well filter backwash is permitted. If elevated gross alpha shows up, we may want to add monitoring for some of the other radiologicals. If they continue to add water supply well filter backwash or green sand filter backwash, we recommend monitoring the NPDES effluent from the plant for iron, manganese, and chloride. rb From: Hennessy, John Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2018 5:03 PM To: Bolich, Rick <rick.bolich@ncdenr.gov> Cc: Smith, Danny <danny.smith@ncdenr.gov> Subject: RE: [External] RE: Ashley Hills waste streams Ck. Just trying to figure out if they are loading pollutants to this facility that we need to monitor. Or, if we have a sufficient dataset to leave the situation as is because we are comfortable that their discharge is being treated adequately. I've been in a meeting all day and just forwarded you an email I got from Wake Co. about this. Wake Co. Env. Services inspects this W WTP under our MCA with them. rb From: Hennessy, John Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2018 4:31 PM To: Bolich, Rick <rick.bolich6Dncdenr.aov> Cc: Smith, Danny <dannv.smith@ncdenr.aov> Subject: RE: [External] RE: Ashley Hills waste streams So, are y'all comfortable that we have adequately sampled the discharge they are loading to the facility for iron, manganese, and radiolical components? I think I am if we have 7 tears if data. In 2006/2007 a few filter systems went in that area. Some direct charge to the collection system, a few - pump and haul. The radiological limits ended with the permit that expired in 2013. Also when was the monitoring for radionuclides performed and when was it removed from the permit? Approximate dates are fine for our purposes.
