Hi Curtis, Happy to provide some clarification on the nutrient additions. We will be adding quantities that amount to 10 g m2 per year by elemental mass of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium as well as micronutrient mix (likely Scotts brand micronutrient mix). For nitrogen, we will be adding time -release urea. For phosphorus, we will use triple super phosphate with a non-sulfar coating. And for potassium, we will use potassium sulfate. The exact brands will be determined at the time of application based on what is readily available. Here is more information on the nutrient additions. To ensure that nutrients are not leaching into the surrounding environments (and to prevent non fertilized plots from receiving nutrients), roots will be severed at the plot boundary and nutrient applications will occur at low tides. The levels in which we are adding nutrients are enough to overcome any nutrient deficits in the environment but not enough to overload the system and leach beyond the applied plots. In addition, application of fertilizer has been readily added to marshes in experimental treatments for decades with no impact on the surrounding environment. For the walkway, it is not a constructed walkway, it is simply a space between each plot dedicated to walking among the experiment without interfering with the plots. With that information, do you still need updated drawings? Please let me know if that answers your questions and if anymore arise. -Steph From: Weychert, Curtis R <curt.weychert@deq.nc.gov> Sent: Tuesday, August 8, 2023 1:51 PM To: Stephanie Valdez <stephanie.valdez@duke.edu> Cc: Liz Hair <Sarah.E.Hair@usace.army.mil>; Meilinger, Michael J <Michael.Meilinger@deq.nc.gov>; Snider, Holley <holley.snider@deq.nc.gov> Subject: Request for additional information Ms. Valdez, we have received some inquiries for clarification of your project. Can you provide more information about the fertilizer you are proposing to use - i.e., how much of it in what areas specifically, how will you ensure the the fertilizer will not leave the project site, and what kind of fertilizer will you be using? Additionally, the workplans make no reference to the walkways that were mentioned in your project narrative. We would need to know things like, the construction materials, methods of installation, dimensions and vertical height above the substrate, etc. Please update your workplan drawings to reflect the questions above. If you respond to this email answering the questions above, I will make sure to add it to our files so you won't have to send in a new project narrative.
