Hey Dave,
Hope you had a good weekend!
We had another storm induced sediment loss over the weekend/last night at our Surry pipe 2266 replacement (401
attached above). While we only received an inch of rain at our project site, the upstream drainages must have gotten
much more. This was evident this morning as all of our EC measures surrounding our work area were in good shape, but
the creek was not — it definitely got up over the banks last night, as it damaged our temporary bypass pipe and upstream
dike. I visited the site today and crews were getting everything back in order. I walked downstream with the project
inspector, and while there were a few small spots where sediment was visible, it was a thin layer, and most of the
stream substrate was visible and uncovered. While we don't have an accurate estimate of sediment lost, I wanted to
report this issue since I'm sure we lost > a 5 gallon bucket worth to the downstream reaches.
Approximately 2/3 of the new pipe is in place, so it looked like much of the sediment went into the pipe when it blew
out the upstream dike. We had positioned a large SDO at the outlet of the pipe, to help with issues like this, and the
contractor was cleaning /refreshing stone on it when I left, as well as shoveling up and removing sediment that had
accumulated in the new pipe. We are pumping all water within the work area through our silt bag. The inspector had
put all of the issues in the NPDES reports, so everything is documented.
We hope to have the new pipe in place by the end of the week, and soon after, we should be able to turn the stream
through it. It's been a good project, and the contractor (new to NCDOT) is doing a good job, but it is apparently a flashy
system and we have had a couple of bad luck instances. I'm hoping the weather will remain dry for the next few days so
that we can finish up the installation and no longer need the dike and bypass pipe.
Thanks and let me know if you need any additional information,
Kevin
