U-5878 culvert 1 riprap repair.ipa
Hi Hannah and Tom,
This is a follow-up email to update you about the sediment loss in riprap that was cleaned up after
the Idalia rain event at the subject project at the inlet of culvert 1. Please see the attached photo.
The contractor removed the riprap that was contaminated with sediment and installed new fabric
and granite riprap.
Please let me or Jon know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thanks,
Anneliese

Subject: U-5878 Commerce Drive Ext. sediment loss
Hannah and Tom,
The project inspector at the subject project has reported a sediment loss at the inlet of Culvert 1
which occurred during the Idalia rain event. The site received more than 5" of rain in a 24-hour
period. Please see the attached photo of the sediment over the riprap at the inlet of the culvert.
Site 1
Sta. 21+85 Lt of -L- at the inlet of the culvert
2.5 CY of sediment (depth over the riprap is approximately 5" deep)
The assistant resident explained:
The loss (photo 1) was the result of erosion of embankment placed to back up the recently placed
curbing (photo 2). Soil erosion measures we in place and the contractor temporary seeded and
mulched the embankment areas on Wednesday 8/30/23. The site received more than 5" of rain in a
24 hour period and the subsequent runoff caused a silt fence failure (photo 3) resulting in this loss.
We would like to determine the best way to repair this site, with your input. I understand that there
is no obvious sediment downstream of either culvert which can be recovered.
Thank you,
Anneliese
