ROGERS, JR. NORTH CAROLINA Director Environmental Quality September 19, 2023 Ms. Diana McElroy 1111 Monterey Valley Drive Chapel Hill, NC 27516 Sent Via Email Subject: Geothermal Well Renewal Permit # W10500013 Summary of Inspection and Sampling on August 22, 2023 Ms. McElroy: In support of your request for renewal of the above -referenced geothermal well permit, Michael Hall from the Division of Water Resources Performed an inspection and collected samples from the well effluent and geothermal system discharge on August 22, 2023. The permittee, Diana McElroy was present during the inspection, and identified the location of the well, and geothermal system discharge (see attached site plan). The well is used for both potable water, and for two geothermal units serving the residence. During the inspection, one of the geothermal units, serving the downstairs, was not working and Ms. McElroy indicated that it was due to be repaired. The other unit, serving the upstairs of the residence, was running during the inspection, actively drawing water from the well, and discharging to surface water. The well vault was in good condition and was secure at the time of the inspection (see attached photographic log). The inside of the vault was stuffed with fiberglass insulation, which was falling apart, and contained an ant nest. The wellhead appeared to be secure. The pipes and wires leading to the well were sound, although corroded. No well plate was observed. The inspector recommended the use of foam insulation, as opposed to fiberglass to avoid the mess and moisture retention within the well vault. Based on this recommendation, the permittee asked the inspector to leave the insulation out of the well vault. Two discharge pipes lead from the well. According to the permittee one is for the water supply, and one is for the geothermal unit; although the pipes were not labeled, and which pipe led to which service could not be determined. The discharge consisted of a 4-inch PVC pipe with a small pool around it. Flow was observed into the pool at the time of the inspection. The water was clear, and was running downhill to a stream to the North of the residence. The inspector recommended to the permittee that the discharge area be kept clear of vegetation, and that the pool be removed, to limit the potential for water to back up into the pipe. Water samples were collected from the well head and the discharge. The well head was sampled using a hose (provided by the permittee) attached to one of the sampling ports on the discharge pipes described above. The well was purged for at least 20 minutes prior to sampling. The discharge from the geothermal unit was sampled by dipping water from the pool surrounding the discharge pipe with a clean sample bottle and decanting into sample bottles for the laboratory. Samples were delivered to the Division of Water Resources Laboratory on August 22, 2023. These measurements were within the expected range for natural groundwater: Sample Temperature (DC) pH (s.u.) Dissolved Oxygen (mg/1) Specific Conductivity Salinity (ppt) (umhos/cm) W1 Effluent 16.48 6.82 5.59 194.37 0.09 W1 Discharge 19.24 7.49 6.27 182.20 0.09 The measurements are relatively similar between the well effluent and the system discharge, with the exception that the temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen was slightly higher. Laboratory analytical results were below the North Carolina Groundwater Standards (NCAC 15A.02L), with the exception of total and fecal coliform. Both total and fecal coliform should not be detected in groundwater, and the detection of these parameters is likely the result of contamination from the use of the hose, and not representative of an impact to the well. The detection of total and fecal coliform in the discharge in not unexpected, given that the sample, by necessity, was drawn from a vegetated, small pond surrounding the discharge pipe, and the water was in contact with soil and vegetation. Neither the field measurements or the laboratory results suggest a concern regarding groundwater quality, and the continued use of the well for both a potable supply, and geothermal air conditioning is appropriate. We appreciate your assistance during the inspection, and if you have any questions regarding this report or its conclusions, please contact Michael Hall at (919) 791-4237 or via email at.michael.halI@deg.nc.gov.
