This is the second loss into Salem Creek. The first being during intense storms on Thursday night. I didn’t report the last one, as there was no measurable sediment to be removed from Salem Creek. The measures were undermined, so whatever got in was swept away. In last night’s rain, measurable sediment is along the edges of the channel. I’ve attached 4 pictures. 3 of the attached pictures are from the south bank. In these pictures you can see that the silt fence and rock silt screens were washed out and some material was deposited into the channel. The remaining picture is a view of the north side in which you can see deposited sediment. I’m not sure how much of this was deposited from the work area, given the color. We’ll remove what we can when the flow goes down and repair the undermined silt fence. The area under the bridge is very confined, and it receives a good bit of runoff from existing 52. Also, we have a slope drain to take the water from the roadway directly to the river (i.e. clean water to clean water), however, it keeps getting moved by people who are riding through the project. There’s a greenway that’s being relocated during construction; however, the bikes continue to come through the project, and evidently move it out of the way. Phil and the designer are out there this morning doing their monthly walk thru. I’ll forward his report when I see it. We’re also checking to see if he has any additional recommendations. On a side note, no more sediment has deposited at site 1 where we were having problems before.
