Lake Norman Maintenance Monitoring Program 2021 Summary
Greetings,
Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC, McGuire Nuclear Station submits three copies of the Lake Norman
Maintenance Monitoring Program 2021 Summary, as required by NPDES Wastewater Permit
NC0024392.
Results of the 2021 data were comparable with that of previous years. No obvious short-term
or long-term impacts of station operations were observed, and the data supports an
environment suitable for sustaining a balanced and indigenous aquatic biological community.
Additionally, 2021 station operational data demonstrates compliance with permit thermal
limits and cool water management requirements.
In addition, we are requesting to discontinue the Maintenance Monitoring Program (MMP) and
associated annual reporting requirements under part A. (16) of the NPDES Wastewater permit.
A similar request was also made in the NPDES permit renewal package submitted August 13,
2019. The original goals of the MMP were to: 1) Maintain long-term datasets to detect
significant impacts from operations and 2) Address key water quality and biological parameters
of concern. Over three decades, these MMP reports have demonstrated Duke Energy
operations have not had cumulative impacts on Lake Norman, and the lake continues to be an
environment which supports balanced aquatic biological communities. Water quality and
fisheries data will continue to be collected under the approved Lake Norman Study Plan and
reported in 316(a) demonstration reports as per part A. (6) of the current NPDES Wastewater
permit.
