required to be maintained under Article 21 or regulations of the Environmental Management Commission
implementing that Article, or who falsifies, tampers with, or knowingly renders inaccurate any recording or
monitoring device or method required to be operated or maintained under Article 21 or regulations of the
Environmental Management Commission implementing that Article, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable
by a fine not to exceed $25,000, or by imprisonment not to exceed six months, or by both. (18 U.S.C. Section

Unimin Corporation— Schoolhouse Quartz Facility
Present Operating Status: Unimin Corporation—Schoolhouse Quartz Facility is engaged in the
mining, milling and separation of Alaskite ore to produce quartz, feldspar and mica. The
wastewater treatment plant consists of dewatering cyclones,thickeners, disc filters,alum, lime, and
polymer addition, pH adjustment, emergency pond,mix/reactor tanks,multimedia filters, filter
press, recycle, and flow measurement. The plant is currently limiting flow to <1,500 gpm average.
The facility currently may add lime (Ca(OH)2), sulfuric acid(H2SO4), sodium bicarbonate
(Na2CO3)and Calcium Chloride (CaC12) as needed for pH control. The facility may add alum
(Al2(SO4)3), aluminum chlorohydrate(Al2C1(OH)5), anionic polymer and cationic polymer as
needed for flocculation. The facility may add an organic defoamer as needed. Other chemicals
used in the process at the main plant include HF,caustic, amine,petroleum sulfonate,and fuel oil.
Oil and grease are possible from small amounts of leaks and drips from mobile equipment. HCl is
used in the laboratory and R&D facilities.
Tailings Management: Tailings obtained from the wastewater treatment plant are not defined as
a solid waste and is not regulated by the Solid Waste Division. Wastes of this nature are disposed
of in designated waste disposal areas covered under the Mining Permit.
