Residuals generated at the WWTP include waste activated sludge(WAS)from the extended aerationprocess. The WAS is pumped byRAS pumps to the 100 000- allon digester p p p p g g for aerobic digestion. The operator indicates that WAS is pumped to the digester approximately three times a year. Once the level in the digester reaches a certain level, aerobic conditions are maintained by introducing oxygen through mechanical aeration via rotating discs located in the digester. The aerator provides sufficient air to keep the contents mixed and aerobic, allowing for solids digestion. The digester is operated in a fill and decant mode where the tank is filled with WAS, the contents aerated, the solids settled and decanted, and then the tank filled again. The operator decants the digester two to three times a year. The digester bottom solids are typically emptied once per year to the eight sludge drying beds. The waste sludge, once dried in the drying beds, is then hauled off-site to a licensed contracted landfill (Uwharrie Environmental) for disposal. The dried sludge is sampled every five years for vector testing.
