Dear Mr. Poupart: Permitting Sectior
In accordance with Part II Section E. 2(b). and Part III Section E of the subject NPDES permit, Duke
Energy Progress,Inc. (Duke) is providing notice that the wetlands wastewater treatment system will be
removed from service when the Flue Gas Desulphurization system is connected to the Metropolitan
Sewage District. Removal of this wastestream will significantly reduce the amount of pollutant
discharged to outfall 001 thereby triggering the notification required by Part H Section E. 2(b).
Additionally, as part of the FGD system will be closed and continued discharge of FGD wastewater will
cease,the notification of facility closure required by Part III Section E of the subject permit is hereby
made.
This action is necessary to allow for the access and removal of ash located within the 1964 ash basin. As
discussed in previous correspondence and meetings,Duke wishes to keep outfall associated with FGD
wastewater(outfall 005) in its permit as a"permitted"outfall in the event that a continued discharge to
the MSD sewer is no longer available.
