The Yeomans Rotary Distributor
shown on the cover and above is
installed at Newport, Tennessee.
The W diameter distributor has a
capacity of 1500 to 4500 gpm.
The function of a trickling filter is the oxidation
of organic matter and the biological coagulation
of finely divided solids, normally used as a sec-
ondary step in treating settled sewage. This
function is accomplished principally by micros-
copic organisms thriving in a slime clinging to
the filter media.
The Rotary Distributors described in this cata-
log can be used successfully in any trickling
filter system regardless of the application —
sand filter, standard rate filter, high rate filter,
or the celebrated Aero-Filter System.

The hydraulically driven distributor line detailed
in this catalog offers engineers a complete com-
bination of 'components, and allows specification
of the most efficient and economical unit for each
particular application.
Recognizing the merits of both the mercury and
mechanical seal for center columns, Yeomans has
a complete range of sizes in each type. Further,
three types of nozzles have been developed to
meet the number of specific applications of a
rotary distributor. Each type of nozzle can be
furnished in a range of sizes or orifice openings.
Distinguishing features of all Yeomans Distributors
regardless of the combination of components are
the low operating heads made possible by the
large openings and elimination of restrictions to
flow; the efficient bearing arrangement that mini-
mizes resistance to rotation but gives maximum
stability to the entire machine.

Yeomans Distributors can be furnished for any
sewage flow within practical limits, to provide
uniform distribution on trickling filters up to 200 .
feet in diameter. A table of column sizes and ca-
pacities is shown on Pages 6 and 7. For sewage
flows too low to insure rotation of these machines
Yeomans recommends the use of the "Water -Wheel"
Distributor, described in a separate catalog.

operation
The method of supplying sewage to a rotary distributor
will depend on the engineer's overall scheme for the
plant layout and the hydraulic gradient available at
each particular installation.. The principal means of
supplying sewage to a rotary distributor are: applica-
tion through a dosing siphon; direct gravity feed; and,
pumping directly to the center column.
Dosing siphons are incorporated where it is desirable
or necessary to apply a uniform dosage and/or secure
intermittent dosing and rest cycles. A dosing siphon
will prevent flows coming to the distributor below the
minimum operating rate for a given machine.
The most common method of supplying sewage to a
rotary distributor is direct gravity feed. Sufficient
static head must be available between the center line
of the distribution arms and the preceding holding
point to afford proper operation of the machine (be-
tween the required flow range) with the forces created
by hydraulic reaction. Where excessive flow variation
is present, the periods during low flow may be aug-
mented by recirculation.
Where a particular plant layout or plant topography will
not lend itself to gravity flow, the sewage is pumped
directly to the rotary distributor. A rotary distributor
is a hydraulic flow control device, the pumps and the
distributor working as a well -coordinated team. Both
the pumps and the distributor should be furnished by
Yeomans to afford proper selection of the pump impel-
ler and number, and size of nozzles on the distributor.
center
columns
The center column consists of a stationary column and
a rotating manifold. The entire weight of the revolv-
ing mechanism is transmitted to -the stationary column
by a heavy-duty, anti -friction, spherical roller thrust
bearing, mounted at the upper junction of the station-
ary column and the rotating manifold. The revolving
parts are steadied against the stationary central sup-
port at the bottom of the manifold by a sleeve bearing
or by ball -bearing type guide roller bearings.
A rotary distributor requires a head of water on the
nozzles to rotate the machine. The lower junction of
the revolving mechanism and the stationary support
must be sealed to prevent the escape of sewage.

Mercury seal center columns are fitted with

an extended skirt on the rotating manifold that
'
divides a deep well in the stationary column.
This well is filled with mercury and forms a
water -tight and air -tight seal. Should an un-
usual head of liquid inside the pillar force
mercury out of the seal chamber, the mercury
is retained in an annular safety catchchamber,
i
and is automatically returnedto the seal cham-
ber when the head returns to normal. The
mercury seal will withstand approximately

mechanical seal
The Yeomans mechanical seal center column
offers double protection. First, the upper sec- ROTATING
tion of the, seal is packed with grease, which MANIFOLD
acts as a buffer to prevent grit from coming
in direct'contact with the upper mechanical
seal. Second, the lower section of the seal
is an oil chamber, which encases a large
bronze bearing.
The mechanical, spring loaded, neoprene seals
forming the oil bath for the lower bearing,
will not "blow" or leak under excessive heads
or pump surges, and are friction -free, so as
_
not to impair distributor rotation. The oil

The selection of the number, size and type of nozzles
to be used on each distributor is based on the hydrau-
lic calculation for that particular project. After the
number of nozzles has been selected, the spacing of
the nozzles on each distributor arm is located graph-
ically, thus providing an even distribution on each
square foot of surface area.

nozzles
DIE-CAST NOZZLE
This nozzle is an aluminum alloy casting. The smooth
bore permits a good discharge through the nozzle even
at low flow and minimizes clogging. The spreader
plate is pivoted on the nozzle casting and is adjust-
able. An oval shape assures maximum distribution
over the bed. This nozzle is used on the smaller ma-
chines and on standard rate and sand filters.
ROUND ORIFICE NOZZLE
This nozzle consists of a stainless steel orifice and
a fixed spreader plate which is held in position by the
orifice nozzle. The spreader plate projects upward
from the bottom of the nozzle and is arranged to allow
full view of the orifice for cleaning without moving
the plate. The position and shape of the spreader
plate gives excellent spread of the orifice delivery
without robbing reaction force. This nozzle is used
on the larger machines and on high rate distributors.
AERO NOZZLE
The Aero nozzle assembly is composed of a series
of parts. The nozzle bowl and removable cap are alu-
minum alloy. The saddle that holds the nozzle to the
distributor arm is cast iron. Ejection of liquid is away
from the arm and in an upward and outward direction.
The ejected liquid forms a large oval umbrella -like
pattern to accomplish a raindrop application on the
surface media. Designed for Aero-Filter distributors,
it may also be used on other machines.

Each distributor shall be as manufactured by Yeomans Brothers
Company of Melrose Park, Illinois.
Each distributor shall be capable of handling flows ranging from
52_gpm minimum to 11,:'-5,_gpm maximum.
center column
The stationary center column shall be not less than
inches in diameterand shall be heavy cast iron or fabricated steel
with flat base*, suitable for mounting on a hollowconcrete center
pier. Ample port areas shall be provided to permit unrestricted
flow from the stationary column to the rotating manifold. The
