The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has started the project
development, environmental, and engineering studies for the subject project. Right of way
acquisition for the project is scheduled in State Fiscal Year 2024 and construction in State Fiscal
Year 2025. The project is being developed using State funds under the North Carolina State
Environmental Policy Act. However, NCDOT intends to complete a Categorical Exclusion for
possible future compliance purposes should the project become eligible for federal funding.
The purpose of the proposed project is to replace a structurally deficient bridge. The
attached figures show the project location and study area. The coordinates of Bridge 81 are
35.635939,-81.223781.
Federal, state, and local agencies are being contacted for their comments regarding this
project. We would appreciate any information you might have that would be helpful in evaluating
potential environmental impacts of the project, as well as any permits or approvals your agency
may require. We kindly request that your agency respond by September 08, 2023, so your
comments can be used in the initial preparation of the project's environmental documentation.
