The plant had several daily violations for fecal coliform and exceeded the monthly average. Based on a review of the monthly operations some possible contributors were noted. With sudden increased temeratures the oxidation ditch had difficulty maintaining proper dissolved oxygen that contributed to increased denitrification in the clarifiers. In addition, staff noted a "gel' like growth in the UV system which may have or may not have contributed to the fecal increases by preventing proper UV penetration in the chamber. Staff addressed the fecal violations by adjusting the rotor speeds in the oxidation ditch, Increased return flow and cleaning in the clarifiers, additional take down and cleaning of the disk filters, and complete take down of the UV system for cleaning, disinfection and some bulb replacements. The plant has a history of these type of violations in the spring when the temperatures change from cool to hot. The Wilmington Regional office was notified about the violations.
