Most of the water quality parameters at the Town of Clyde's lower outfall site (#35) showed a decrease in data values when compared to the site (#4) located upstream (downstream from Pactiv Evergreen, Canton,NC). The NO3-N result was slightly higher at the Clyde site (#35)when compared to the site downstream from Pactiv Evergreen (#4) during April and May, but wasn't considered a `high' result and was still below the limit. In May the pH value reported at the Clyde site (#35)was slightly higher than the downstream from Pactiv Evergreen site (#4), but wasn't considered a `high' result and was below the limit. One of the water quality values at the Clyde site was considered a 'high(highlighted)' result during the sampling event that was not already reported elevated from samples collected upstream of Clyde (just below Canton). The turbidity value collected on 4/8/2023 was considered high at the Clyde site (#35), but was a result of a rainfall event that was not captured at the Pigeon River DWS Canton site (#4). This also explains the elevated TSS (total suspended sediment)value collected during this event. Water collections for this monitoring program are not confined to dry weather events. Note the mill closure during the June sample and the drop in the conductivity readings. Table 1. VWIN Results (April and May, 2023): the water monitoring results from the Town of Clyde location compared to the nearest site upstream, Pactiv Evergreen. Highlighted boxes are readings that are elevated.Highlighted results exceed standard;strike means values too low to report accurately;and NA means volunteer failed to collect a sample. *sample results reflect increased suspended sediment due to a rainfall event. b. Fecal monitoring—On June 13th samples were collected from four sites: #1 River's Edge Park in Clyde (upper ETJ on the Pigeon River), #2 Connor Mill, #3 Poison creek, and#4 lower Pigeon River at US 74 crossing (lower ETJ on the Pigeon River) (Figure 1). The sites were chosen to capture the fecal levels entering Clyde's ETJ and exiting Clyde's ETJ as well as two major tributaries that enter from the town side of the Pigeon River(Figure 1). Table 2. Map showing sites where fecal samples were taken. The results of the fecal monitoring detected some fecal entering and leaving Clyde's ETJ via the Pigeon River, but neither sample was above the 200 colonies/100 ml threshold. In contrast, the two major tributaries sampled had fecal levels above the 200 colonies/100 ml, but not at levels high enough to affect the lower Pigeon River levels as the water leaves Clyde's ETJ. Some sources for the elevated could be a result of farm animals and failing septic systems upstream in Connor Mill and Poison creeks outside the Clyde ETJ. BMP #5: Informative Display: NA BMP #8: Newsletter article: 1 article: Protect Our Waterways: Pickup After Your Pet According to the American Pet Products Association there are 89.7 million dogs in the US. and owners are taking their furry friends everywhere. You can see dogs along greenway trails, downtown areas, local parks, in cafes, pubs, and the list goes on. Not only does the poop smell it contains bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can harm humans. The EPA estimates there are as many as 23 million fecal bacteria in just 1 gram of poop! When not picked up, dog waste can pollute rivers, streams, and lakes even if you don't live near a waterway. Strormwater runoff carries pet waste into drainage ditches and stormdrains where it is then dumped, untreated, into the nearest waterway. When present in large quantities, pet waste can even make waterways unfit for human contact. Once in a waterway, pet waste can travel long distances and pollute a large area. To help reduce pet waste pollution in our waterways: • Bag It& Trash It! Use a plastic bag to remove the waste and dispose of it in the trash. That's a good use for leftover bread bags. They even make biodegradable bags. • Flush It! Flush it down your toilet, but not the bag please. • Bury It! Purchase an in-ground pet waste digester for the backyard. Ask your local pet supplier where you can purchase one. • Don't Plant It! Do NOT put cat or dog waste in to your composting bin or pile. It can leach bacteria, viruses, pathogens, and diseases into the soil. • Don't Dump It! Do NOT put pet waste, or anything, in stormdrains. We can all enjoy the company of our dog and keep the environment healthy if we remember to pick up after our pet. Reducing water pollution isn't just a one-person task it's a community effort. 1 Y t ., ? . \' / j A s __ ,„ .,,., ',4* ', y, , ,,,,,,,,,„,,, ,,,_ , , & Cj' \ - e,_ _ of ,ti .` ,f7 ,,...„. _ ..-, , BMP #9: Social Media Campaign on HWA's Facebook Page: 5/18/23 -fertilizer https://www.facebook.com/HaywoodWaterways/posts/pfbid02oTNAD4eLP51Jh1TmRcD7FbfzC nNun9h8tMw13kxTxWfU4MGVnw9bkguEgkvcKxWkl? cft [0]=AZUh9WWT4oVefcg8kn46X6 OqV9wnBE3nZvWgIk1HXbV d- EaDmCdUQpjFZIf6ZMrRCzNsubCvxC C31flm vyujNxunFhkclgsdUJ4fdtCJMzhuns6suRWfVi87r6 75jf k& tn =%2C0%2CP-R 5/19/23 Illicit discharges https://www.facebook.com/HaywoodWaterways/posts/pfbid02PFMtJoQg6ku2aJKGYLCTB7AS6 V5wnsgYAkpYHTjfeBfhgsEGugUFmimsuKwANusHI?_cft [0]=AZWDAAK8rTZebU6YHUvnw3ze bo95zDO8oAsELSSjJWbHgBQSV9bDmFrZuHBTVIU5ODI9gpWw0arHVJDmGffoWeiOli24OYl2SvUJ ycgBBQyWbPxHAsBjIYQJAd9nC9A50JjH4ni3fFBPuououujoRQf3bSSmHfxGQogND4LKOw7HKecy M_7 u Loyoevl n CGttktA& tn =%2C0%2CP-R 5/26/23 Pet Waste https://www.facebook.com/HaywoodWaterways/posts/pfbid0ab2dwc5hILrQybJ8ovGdntEHxgT YDJaKeDd5gR3Xsh3fPhjinVLfmkH7evserdRbl? cft [0]=AZUvRD- UUS8UtHDquFL9RQ4mu9GPwtZsSJKPg6KKsxXBnBmzZslfaRU80z8T8C4B2OuBHSm238WOHOdgH ijLL5NEge3R2rUglr3aje509M Bp34m6M UAFHbWpaleZdFQR4& tn =%2C0%2CP-R BMP #10: Stormwater webpage updates: Updated community engagement with the stencil event and added a link providing homeowners about how to reduce sediment in their backyard.
