Water quality monitoring results at the Town of Clyde's lower outfall site showed a decrease in data values when compared to the site located just upstream (downstream from Pactiv Evergreen, Canton,NC). None of the water quality values at the Clyde site were considered 'high(highlighted)' results during the sampling event that were not already reported elevated from samples collected upstream of Clyde just below Canton. BMP#3 Post card: HELP KEEP SEDIMENT OUT OF OUR STREAMS Sediment is the#1 pollutant in Haywood County!!Sediment comes from rain flowing over exposed ground and from eroding streambanks during high rainfall events. Solutions: • Examples of native plants include: • •Avoid mowing 10-25 feet 4 •Red maple •Silky willow from a waterway. • I:: •Silver maple •Spicebush •Point downspouts into the -!• y' •Dogwood •Serviceberry lawn. •River birch •Ninebark •Cover exposed ground with •Sycamore •Blueberry grass or shrubs. 4' •Plant native trees and shrubs "'7 - along waterways.Once t ' established they provide better root systems, require less water, and are more pest resilient than non-native For more information contact a local nursery or the NC plants. BMP#3 Tax Bill Insert: REDUCE SEDIMENT: PROTECT STREAM BANKS SEDIMENT is Haywood CounNs to water pollutant. WHAT IS SEDIMENT?y Sediment ream,or resda its m lento a river, Sediment comes from rain flowing over exposed ground, and from eroding streambanks during high rainfall events. WHY SHOULD YOU CARE ABOUT SEDIMENT? •It degrades water quality, which could mean more expensive drinking water. •It clogs farmer's irrigation pipes, which could mean more expensive food. •It can block stormdrains, which increases the likelihood of localized flooding. •It clogs gills of aquatic animals and reduces their health, and smothers their habitat (think trout!). •It degrades water quality, which can impact recreation like fishing and swimming. u yes mil. BMP #5: Informative Display: of our Streams II ,, mal iii , 0 ._, . ._ ‘17 BMP #8: Newsletter article: 1 article: Be smart when applying fertilizer to your lawn In pursuit of the perfect lawn many homeowners may find themselves spreading just a `little extra' fertilizer to give their lawn a boost. However, contrary to belief, applying too much fertilizer can be harmful to the lawn and our waterways. Most lawns don't require consistent fertilizer application. Lawns that are over fertilized risk turf damage, releasing excess greenhouse gasses, and contaminating our waterways. When fertilizers are applied in excess or not as directed on the label the more likely it will enter a waterway. Once in a waterway fertilizer can cause algal blooms to occur. When algae die, the decomposing bacteria use oxygen, which can drop to levels too low for fish to breath. Some blooms, like blue-green algae, release toxins into the water and air making it dangerous for wildlife and humans. Every summer algal blooms are responsible for the closing of popular swimming spots across the nation. Applying lawn fertilizer may seem simple, but if not done correctly it can have unforeseen environmental impacts. Here are guidelines to help: • Have the soil tested by the NC Haywood County Extension office to determine if fertilizer is needed (828-456-3575). • Follow the application instructions. • Don't apply before a heavy rain event. • Fill spreaders on a hard surface so any spills can be easily picked up. • Provide natural vegetative strips along waterways. • Avoid applying near a stormdrain. • Save the rake and bagging, use a mulching mower; decomposing grass clippings provide nutrients and reduce the need for fertilizers. Plant trees or shrubs along streams and ditches to create a runoff absorbing buffer. • Consider starting a compost! Pursuing the perfect lawn may be the goal, but is it worth the financial and environmental costs? Take pride in a natural lawn!
