WASTEWATER SPILL IN HALIFAX COUNTY Senate Bill 729, effective September 201h, 2014 modifies G.S. 143.215.1C by requiring issuance of a press release within 24 hours (originally 48 hours) after the owner or operator has determined a discharge of 1,000 gallons or more of untreated wastewater to surface waters of the state. In accordance with G.S. 143.215.1, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media in the affected county (ies): On June 9th, 2023, Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District had a wastewater spill of an estimated 1,500 gallons from the wastewater collection system from Manhole 254, sub-basin T, located at Key St outfall. The spill began at 09:00 a.m. and ended at 10:00 a.m. The spill occurred in Roanoke Rapids, NC and began and ended on the 9th. Untreated wastewater due to a line blockage spilled into the waters of the state tributary to Chockoyotte Creek. Preparation is being made for all known repairs necessary to reduce the source of inflow to return the pipe system to service and minimize further discharge. The Division of Water Resources was notified of the event on June 9, 2023 and is reviewing the matter. For more information contact Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District at (252) 537-9137. Thanks!
