From: Willis, Thomas C Sent: Friday, May 29, 2015 1:40 PM To: tracey.l.wheeler@usace.army.mil; Ward, Garcy; Daisey, Greg Cc: Carpenter,Kristi; Emory, Scott L Subject: Permit modification request for additional hand clearing associated with required safety clear zone of 30 feet from the travel lane - R-2507A / Gates County / US 158 Widening Regulatory Agencies Attached is the permit modification request for the additional hand clearing of 0.2058 acres. This clearing is being done to accommodate for a 30’ clear recovery area, which is a federal safety standard. The design mistakenly left this area out of the submitted permit drawings. These areas are directly adjacent to the road shoulder and typically don’t extend more than 5-8 feet from the existing cleared shoulder. Approximately 30 % of this area will be cleared by means of a 1 bobcat mulching head attachment, the remaining area will be cut by hand with chainsaws (foot traffic). The timber will be loaded by excavator, along the existing road shoulder and disposed of properly. Do to the fact that traffic is already utilizing this roadway and the required recovery area is not yet properly established throughout the project, would it be possible to get a verbal approval to proceed, while awaiting the permit issuance. We will commit to placing the orange safety fence, as was discussed in the field and make sure only the area shown on the drawings is cleared. This will help us get back into compliance with the safety standard, as quickly as possible. Thanks for your consideration and let me know if you have any questions.
