This document summarizes stream conditions observed during my site visit on May 12, 2023. The
stream restoration project on private property was completed in August 2021:
Stream: Whitewater River
Project Length: 280 linear feet
Coordinates: 35.05278,-83.05222
Drainage Area: 7.4 square miles with 90% forested watershed
NCDEQ Classification: C;Tr;HQW (Secondary Recreation; Trout; High Quality Waters)
Stream restoration was funded by the permittee to improve water quality, stabilize eroding
streambanks, and enhance natural habitats for fish and other aquatic species. The project consisted of
streambank grading to a stable slope, installation of 3 log j-hook vanes, and transplanting native riparian
vegetation to bare streambanks where needed. Permitting documents are attached for reference.
The stream restoration project was observed to be in excellent condition during this monitoring visit.
Visual evidence indicates that Whitewater River has experienced multiple overbank flow events that
have deposited sand on the floodplain and along the banks. The streambanks are stable with healthy
vegetation. The streambed is maintaining the design form with deep pools supporting habitat. The three
log j-hook vanes are stable and performing intended functions as shown in photos below.
