Well, for certification purposes, there isno distinction made forjust certain groups ofinvertebrates.
So, vvedonotjust certify for mussels (or mayflies, etc).
We certify to make sure that whoever is collecting and identifying benthological samples is doing it consistent with our
protocol such that their data can theoretically be used by DVVRfor use support decisions.
We have two private labs that are currently certified: Lenat Consulting, and Pennington and Associates.
Of those two, only Lenat Consulting islocal.
Pennington and Associates isin eastern TN.
The other certified labs are associated with Duke Power and Mecklenburg Co. (NC).

Thanks Eric and Larry for your advice here. If we have no training available then you are right I really can not say
anything other than requiring identification of benthic macroinverts be done at a Certified Biological Lab. BTW does
mussel identification need to be done at a "Certified Biological Lab"? I am assuming they are certified for mussel and
clam identification if they are the best in the state? Is there of these labs available for NC?

Catena did the biological sampling for Carbonton Dam removal monitoring, and in that case they did the collecting and
sent the samples to Wendell Pennington, who is a Certified Biological Lab. Presumably they would do the same here.
The only possible concern is competence in collecting a bug sample. I am not personally aquainted with the
qualifications of the bug samplers. Catena started as a group that did mussel searches and they are the best in the State
at that. As we learned from CZR's collecting for Martin Marietta (when Eric's collection doubled the taxa count at a site
CZR had done), doing what our SOP says and collecting a good sample are different things. DWR currently has no
training class on how to collect samples (though Penrose and I used to teach one 10 yrs ago), so we really have no way
to ensure quality sample collection, like we do sample ID.

Laboratory or they need to hire a laboratory that is already certified..
I have no dog in the fight as to whether or not the data needs to be uptothe standards necessary for utilization in use
support decisions—that is up to the client, Catena, and/or the folks in planning and depends entirely on what they
([atena and/or their clients) are trying toaccomplish.

Ginny-
Attached here are data for two benthic sites that seem to fit your requirements. TheattachedmapshovvsaUbenthic
sites upstream and near your coordinates. If there are other sites that are of interest to you, please let me know. Note
that BB196 is on an unnamed tributary, so it will likely be draining a small catchment and won't necessarily host
community comparable to the river sites.
Eric may want to respond to the query regarding training.
Cheers.

Hey Guys,
Do we have any fish or bug information on the Rocky River (or tribs) in Chatham Co near Reeves Lake? Looks like

Hey Larry,
| received a baseline monitoring methodology for the Hoosier Bank mitigation project (20130412). It is along the Rocky
River 35.63560, -79.21125. 1 wanted to see if we had any fish or aquatic macroinvertebrate data from that location or
within the vicinity to make sure the provider reviews for their baseline data. They referred to NHP data and other
biological databases as their reference data. FVVSand VVR[vvi|| be reviewing these methods carefully as they asked for
the baseline data so | don't think | need to ask Brynn to look atthis. They will be using the SOP for collecting Benthic
Macroinverts, Qual 4 method where applicable. This is the Catena group, have you heard of them? Do we need to be
concerned with staff training for the methodology?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks, ginny

Dear IRT members,
Attached for your review is a proposal from The Catena Group for baseline data collection for the proposed Hoosier
Dam removal stream mitigation bank in Chatham County /Cape Fear 03. We are requesting your review and any
comments you may have on this document by June 1.
As a reminder of where things stand with this project, last summer you reviewed a Draft Monitoring Plan and we
discussed this and other items in the July 2014 IRT meeting. USFWS and WRC subsequently provided comment on
this document. The attached baseline data collection proposal is based on that document (2014 Draft Monitoring Plan)
and incorporates the comments we received from USFWS and WRC.
The performance standards for this project, and specific post - project monitoring criteria, will be developed later this
summer. They will be informed by the baseline data we collect and further discussion with the IRT.
Also, I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that I will be moving to California in June. My contact
information will remain the same and I will continue to oversee the development of this project on behalf of the
project sponsor. John Hutton and Wildlands Engineering remain the lead on design and development of the Mitigation
Plan.
Thank you in advance for your review of this baseline data collection proposal and we look forward to receiving any
comment you may have by June 1. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any clarifying questions.
