Box 1325 Asheville, N.C. 28802 (828)-251-1900 (828)-251-1945 May 2, 2023 Mr. Landon Davidson Regional Supervisor Water Quality Section NCDWQ- Asheville Regional Office 2090 U.S. Hwy 70 Swannanoa, NC 28778 Re: NOV-2023-LV-0293/WQ0033804 Dear Landon, This letter is in response to your 4-27-23 letter from 7-15-22 inspection to Laurel Mountain Retreat attached. The 12/6/22 sample for ammonia nitrogen of 9.7 mg/L over the daily limit of 6 mg/L. We sampled three more samples for the month with a 14.8 mg/L, 0.14 mg/L, and 0.14 mg/L. This resulted in the average of 6.2 mg/L over the 6.0 mg/L limit. The 12/6/22 sample for total suspended solids of 14.6 mg/L over the daily limit of 10 mg/L. We sampled four more times in the month with 12.4 mg/L, 8 mg/L, 8.6 mg/L and 8.2 mg/L. This resulted in a average of 10.36 mg/L over the 10.0 mg/L limit. We noted in the report that either cleaning products or large temperature changes have caused a spike in ammonia nitrogen and total suspended solids. The ammonia was much better by the 12/20/22 sampling event but the total suspended solids stayed higher than the monthly average. We asked the owner to review cleaning products used at the cabins and quantity used. Feel free to contact me anytime if I need to provide any further information or assistance.
