Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point (Permit NC0003816) submits the following in
response to your NOTICE OF DEFICIENCY (NOD) letter with tracking number NOD-2023-LV-
0034 dated March 16, 2023.
The NOD was issued for exceeding the daily maximum limit established in the permit for
enterococci and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) on January 27, 2023.
The exceedances of enterococci and TSS were caused when an excessive amount of backwash
from the nano -filtration process at the Air Station's potable water treatment facility was released to
the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) causing the turbidity to spike. All parameters were back
within compliant limits the following day.
To prevent recurrence, we have implemented operational controls requiring potable water
treatment operators to reduce the rate of backwash discharge and to coordinate discharges with the
WWTP operator in responsible charge.
