The facility serves as a metal recycling center for Mecklenburg County, as well as other counties in North Carolina. File Review/History: The facility is brand new and has not previously been inspected by CMSWS. However, the facility is owned by and adjacent to Greenway Waste of North Meck, which was inspected by CMSWS on 4/27/2021 and issued a satisfactory report. Inspection Summary: At the time of inspection, the facility was observed to be in compliance with the Mecklenburg County Surface Water Pollution Control Ordinance. Please see the inspection report for comments and recommendations Site Inspection Deficiency Comments Stormwater system (catch basins, No Stormwater conveys through the site via sheet flow and one inlets, outfalls, etc.) drop inlet, which discharges to one dry detention basin SCM. Routine vehicle maintenance is conducted offsite. According to facility personnel, a third party pressure washes equipment in a designated area at the facility with tap water. CMSWS recommends only using water to rinse vehicles or collecting any used wash water containing surfactants, to protect water quality. Oil/water separator and/or N/A pretreatment Waste storage/disposal area(s) - Recommendation Three open top dumpsters and one municipal waste open tops, waste containers, scrap dumpster, all used for general waste, were observed outdoors metal bins, etc. and uncovered. The municipal waste dumpster was observed with a drain plug in place. CMSWS recommends keeping all outdoor waste containers covered to protect water quality. Spill response equipment Recommendation Spill absorbent material was observed in the sorting building but was observed without a label. CMSWS recommends adding a label to the container with spill absorbent material for easy access in the event of a spill.
